Bringing working artists into the museum setting, giving the community access to the artistic process
What is the Artist Studio/Demonstration Program?
This program enables museum visitors to meet artists and gives artists an opportunity to work with the public. By watching an artist work, talking with an artist, and engaging in art-making activities, visitors will learn more about various techniques and processes, thus gaining a greater understanding and appreciation for the art on view at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
This residency application process is open to visual artists living in Northern California.
Artists-in-Residence will work in the Kimball Gallery at the de Young Museum or in the Rodin Gallery at the Legion of Honor. They will create a studio environment in these spaces, speak with museum visitors about their work, exhibit works of art, and engage in hands-on art activities with the public.
Stipends are provided by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
Program Description
One-month long program at the de Young takes place in the Kimball Gallery, Wednesdays through Sundays from 1 to 5 pm.
The artist is invited to interact with the public by sharing the creative process and providing an opportunity for visitors of all ages to engage in an interactive/hands-on art-making component. Museum interns will be available to assist the artist with the interactive projects. The artist will be invited to exhibit works of art in the Kimball Gallery.
The Kimball Gallery studio is a place for the artist to do work and engage actively with the public. It will not be a studio environment that provides quiet time, nor will it be an environment where the artist should expect to get quality studio time. This residency is designed to be interactive. The space will provide a venue for the artist to gain high exposure to museum visitors and will provide an opportunity to engage in dialogue with many people.
The Artist-in-Residence will be invited to give a talk/presentation in the auditorium and/or teach a children’s workshop. (This is optional.) The Artist-in-Residence will be provided with postcards that will promote the residency, and a reception will be held in the artist’s honor at the closure of the residency.
One-day demos take place at the Legion of Honor’s Rodin Gallery or the de Young Museum’s Kimball Gallery, Tuesdays and Saturdays from noon to 4 pm.
Because we are only able to accommodate 12 artists a year in the Kimball Gallery, the Fine Arts Museums also offers 1-day residencies at the Legion of Honor and Kimball Gallery which are meant to complement the permanent collection and traveling exhibitions. The artist is invited to interact with the public by sharing the creative process with museum visitors of all ages. The artist is invited to exhibit completed works and works-in-progress at these locations.

- Technical skill
- Overall professional quality and aesthetic of work
- Strength and reputation of the artist's work
- Wide range of media represented among the artists selected
