Txutxo Perez is focusing his month-long residency on the concept of revolution. All revolutions need an “office of propaganda” to speak to the masses, to carry the ideas, the hopes, the creed. These offices have been and continue to be created by artisans, master printers, and trained folk artists who have the mission of putting images to various political agendas. Being on the front lines brings a series of physical inconveniences, such as lack of electrical power and transportation of big and heavy presses. Simple and inexpensive mediums have evolved, including the woodblock, linocut, silkscreen, and most recently, stencils, cut-outs and stickies, all of which keep the struggle flowing. Perez will transform the artist studio into an “on-therun” office of propaganda with a basic set-up for printmaking. He will lead demonstrations of different techniques. As a visitor, you are invited to conduct a visual exploration of your roots, personal experiences, cultural heritage, gender, or aesthetics to become both a promoter of and a witness to your own revolution.
Txutxo Perez is a major force in Mission Arts. His audacious work is sacred and edgy, influenced by traditional Mexican graphic forms, but evolved to an evocative, sensuous, playful world of dancers, masked wrestlers, new and old deities. He is one of the main artists responsible for the energetic art that comes from Balazo Gallery. he will be demonstrating some of his favorite techniques and in residence in the month of November.
