Adrián Arias Beautiful Trash, an aesthetic view of plastic waste
December 1, 2010 - January 2, 2011

Wednesdays-Sundays, 1:00-5:00 p.m.

During the month of December, Adrián Arias, Peruvian award winning poet, visual artist, curator and cultural promoter, will be the Artist-in-Residence at the Kimball Gallery. His visual art, like his poetry, explores the absurd, the sensuality of elements, and the connection between reality and dreams.  BEAUTIFUL TRASH, an aesthetic view of plastic waste is a collection of work that combines photography, topography video, installation and performance created from footage shot from the beaches of Peru, Mexico, Spain and the United States.  The still-life scenes of garbage are the inspiration for this project, as they accurately portray the dramatic lack of awareness of human beings who leave behind their indestructible footprints which remain on the earth's surface long after their deaths.  BEAUTIFUL TRASH aims to bring to light the existence of the Trash Vortex currently floating in the Pacific Ocean.  It also seeks to generate a collective consciousness about the unmeasured use of plastic, and its deleterious environmental impact. The public will be encouraged to participate in a series of hands-on interdisciplinary art projects at the Kimball Gallery.
The objects, installations, prints and artwork created in the “Beautiful Trash” residency will be showed at Galeria de La Raza in 2011.

Adrián Arias has participated in international exhibitions in individual and collective shows in Japan, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Canada, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Peru and the US.
